What are signals in networking explained simply

Introduction of Signals

In this article, I will tell you why signals are most impotent term in networking. They act like a language that used by computers, routers and switches to talk each others. for example a human need a common language to communicate and understand. Same as the signals are language that understand and communicate with devices.

The communication without signals are not possible. This idea of communication with them are not new. Remember, if we go back in history, the early telephones are connected with a physical medium like copper cables and used the electrical signals to transmit message across the wire.

Today, the world is a global village in technology and now we use advance signals to power the internet, WI-FI, mobile communication, automation and many more things. now we discuss the types of them and where its used.

If you are learning about the networking and preparing the CCNA, CCNP, or Cisco certification, understanding the signals is most impotent.

Types of Signals in Networking

They are divided into two main types.

Analog Signals

They are continuous signals that very smoothly overtime. They carried data or information in the form of electrical voltage, current or sound waves from one device to another device. for example when i make a phone call to my friend, my voice is convert into electrical form that travel through the medium like telephone lines and on my friend side these electrical form converted into voice to hear my friend.

analog signals

It can used for voice communication, traditional telephone lines, radio and TV broadcasting. some advantage and disadvantage are listed down.

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • These are simple to generate and transmit.
  • naturally supports audio and video signals.
  • create noise and disturbance.
  • difficult to store for future usage.
  • also difficult for process digitally.

Digital Signals

Digital signals are representing data in binary number system (0s and 1s) form. They are discrete, so they making easy for computers and devices to understand. Commonly used in modern networks like Wi-Fi, fiber optics and Ethernet. For example, data being sent over the internet or between two devices using local area network (LAN) using digital signals.

Digital Signal

Advantage of Digital Signals

  • Less noise and disturbance.
  • Easy to compress, store, encryption and decryption.
  • support high speed data transfer.

Disadvantage of Digital Signals

  • Requires more bandwidth than analog.
  • Conversion from analog (like voice) to digital adds complexity.

How signals Travel In Networking

They can travel through wired and wireless medium. let i explain how they works with the help of example.

Guided Mediums (Wired)

Guided mediums are physical mediums that use for connect two or more devices. It is suitable for better communication then unguided medium.

Twisted Pair Cable

Twisted pair cable are made of two copper wires twisted around each others. They are one of the most commonly used in local are network (LAN). These cables are easy to install, cheap and suitable for short distances. Ethernet cable is the example of twisted pair cable that connects two or more devices with router in your home or office. Ethernet cable transmits data and information using digital signals.

Coaxial Cable

This cable have single copper conductor at the middle of cable and covered with insulation and shielding. Coaxial cable mostly used in cable TV, satellite TV connections and broadband internet. It also use to connect CCTV camera with video recorders. This cable supported digital and analog both signals. This cable suitable for limited area like home, office or building.

Fiber Optics

Fiber optics cables use for long distances and high-speed transmission of data as pules of light. It is a very thin glass or plastic fibers covers with PVC insulation. Mostly this cable use for fiber-to-the-home connections, city ti city connections and it make possible to stream 4K videos, playing games online and make high-definition (HD) video calls. This cable supported digital signals.

Unguided Mediums(Wireless)

Unguided mediums are using wireless transmission instead of using physical medium. It is suitable for log distance or where difficult to install the cables.

Radio Waves

Radio waves are wireless medium and its used widely in networking. They can travel long distance and pass through walls, which make them prefect for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile networks. for example: when you connect your mobile phone with Wi-Fi router, the data is transmitted using radio waves. Radio waves are a form of analog signals but its used both digital and analog signals.

Microwaves

Microwaves are a type of wireless transmission medium that uses high-frequency radio waves to transmit data. It uses the frequency between 1 GHz and 300 GHz. They are used for point-to-point communication systems where devices are aligned in a straight line. Mostly microwaves are used in satellite communication, cellular networks, long-distance communication, and radar systems. Microwaves can support both analog and digital signals.

Infrared

Infrared is used in short-range data transmission between devices. It is commonly used in remote controls and short-range data transfer (like old mobiles, laptops, wireless keyboards, microphones, etc.) and is also used in medical and industrial devices. Infrared also used both analog and digital signals.

Real-life example of signals in networking

When you are watching a YouTube video.

  • you can tell YouTube “Networking full course” using your voice input (analog).
  • Analog signal (your voice) converted into digital signal by you device.
  • These signals travel across Wi-Fi or fiber optic to Google Server.
  • The Google server processed your request and send back video as digital signals.
  • Finally converted into sound and video on your device.

This journey is only possible because signals know how to carry and translate data.

Conclusion

Signals are playing most impotrent role in networking. without it communication between devices not possible. They decide how data or information travels from one device to another device. Moderen networks use digital signals becuse they are faster, reliable and resistant to noise.

If you are learn CCNA, CCNP or cisco certificaton, it is importent to studay all basic concepts like netwrking protocols, transmission medium and data communication etc. It make easy understanding for you.
